MACRO SHOTS

Breaktime
2024

When I was 5, I absolutely loved Spongebob . In one episode, Spongebob visits Sandy and a butterfly crawls across his little aqua-helmet thing : a totally innocent and cutesy scenario. Now, you’d expect this CHILDREN’S CARTOON to make Spongebob all giddy and awestruck over this vibrant creature because they want children to get excited about nature, right? RIGHT?

WRONG.

INSTEAD a giant, menacing macro of a butterfly’s grisly face dominated the screen along with a low, guttural screech that blasted the speakers for a whole 30 seconds - fracturing my tiny, virgin mind.

It terrified me so much that when I turned it off, I just stared at a blank screen.
Unblinking.
Soundless.
Unmoving.

To this day, I don’t even know the ending of that episode.
